RefreshFinasteride is used to treat men with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and male pattern hair loss, also called androgenetic alopecia. BPH is caused by an enlarged prostate. Men with BPH usually have difficulty urinating, a decreased flow of urination, hesitation at the beginning of urination, and a need to get up at night to urinate. Finasteride will make these symptoms less severe and reduce the chance that prostate surgery will be needed. It may be used alone or in combination with other medicines such as an alpha-blocker to treat BPH. For men with hair loss, finasteride will increase the number of scalp hairs but will not increase the amount of body hair.
Finasteride blocks the action of an enzyme called 5-alpha-reductase. This enzyme changes testosterone to another hormone that causes the prostate to grow or hair loss in males. It will increase testosterone levels in the body, which decreases prostate size and increases hair growth on the scalp. The effect of finasteride on the prostate and scalp will only last as long as the medicine is taken. When it is stopped, the prostate begins to grow again and the hair will be lost.

But studies are not conclusive, says Dr. Michael Creamer, professor of urology at the University of Manchester.
"The use of this drug has a good safety profile, so far," he says.
The drug is used to treat the symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia, or BPH, and to lower the risk of developing male-pattern baldness.
Proscar, which is available by prescription only, is a once-daily oral drug approved by the US Food and Drug Administration in 1992.
But the drug can cause side effects such as low sex drive, sexual dysfunction, muscle weakness, and loss of muscle mass.
Since it was first developed by the company, Dr. Creamer said it was used for prostate cancer prevention but is now being used to treat prostate-specific antigen (PSA) cancer.
He told Daily Mail Europe that Proscar is a "potentially life-saving drug".
But, he added, this is just a "small number" of people taking it, so it cannot be used alone to treat BPH.
"We really don't know if it's enough to prevent prostate cancer, but it is a very effective treatment."
The drug's scientific name is finasteride. It's sold under the brand name Proscar, which is also used to treat hair loss.
Finasteride is the only drug approved to treat BPH.
But Dr. Creamer says there are risks associated with it.
"It has been on the market for almost 20 years for many years," he says.
The drug is also taken by millions of men around the world, but the drug has not been tested in humans, Dr. Creamer says.
This is the latest drug to be used to treat prostate cancer. The drug has been linked to high blood pressure, a rare blood disorder.
The drug has also been linked to other health problems.
Dr. Creamer said there was a risk of liver damage after taking the drug and some other drugs.
"It is not known whether there's a direct link to the drug, but it is certainly not a direct link in the long term."
The drug is being sold by a drug repurposed for the treatment of enlarged prostate.In 2015, Proscar was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for treating symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia.
The drug is only available in tablet form and is usually taken once a day.
Proscar has not been tested in humans, so Dr. Creamer says there is no scientific evidence to suggest it is safe.
However, Dr. Creamer says he has seen some rare cases of male-pattern baldness.
"The vast majority of these patients do not have any serious health problems and can have symptoms that are not common to them," he says.
The drug has also been used in men to prevent prostate cancer and lower the risk of other diseases.
Other studies have also found that the drug does not increase the risk of prostate cancer.
The drug was not approved for use in women because it has not been proven to protect against breast cancer.
Creamer said the drug was a "potent and safe" way to treat BPH and is used to treat other conditions, including high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart disease, and diabetes.
It is not recommended for use in children, but Dr. Creamer said the drug could be used to treat male-pattern baldness.
In 1998, a British doctor, Dr. David Jones, said that the use of Proscar, which is known as 5α-reductase inhibitors, was "a serious medical problem".The drug was first approved in 1992.
But after its approval by the US FDA in 1993, it was not a "significant medical problem" as the drug's side effects were not serious.
In the 1990s, it was also used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia, a condition that affects both men and women.
The drug's label said it did not cause any sexual problems.
It has been on the market for over 10 years.
In 2003, the drug was also approved to treat high blood pressure.
In adult men, Proscar is used to decrease an enlarged prostate (also known as benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH). It can be used alone or in combination with other medications to alleviate BPH symptoms and possibly avoid surgery.
